5000 personas se movilizarán en más de 30 ciudades de Latinoamérica para superar la pobreza5000 people will join forces in more than 30 cities in latin america to overcome poverty

With operations in 19 countries and more than 5000 people mobilized, TECHO seeks to commemorate The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. “It is not enough to look at poverty, we must get to know it” is the motto that has been implemented to mobilize the whole continent. In social media, there will be a Google Hangout on air, an application on Facebook and the Twitter hashtag #NoMasPobreza will be used to unite all of TECHO’s virtual communities.

A regional movement capable of thinking and visualizing poverty is the target of  TECHO for this upcoming October 17, International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. In order to show the existence of this condition and that it is possible to overcome poverty through joint efforts of the whole society, the organization has organized activities in more than 30 cities in the 19 countries.

Activities between volunteers and residents of the slums, public interventions, conferences, a virtual forum and awareness campaigns in social media have been organized to show Latin-American’s willingness to generate change. This last activity, will count with the participation of representatives of the United Nations Program for Development, Leaders of Slums Corporation “Tambien Somos Chilenos,” as well as representatives from other institutions.

According to UNDP, poverty is a situation that determines the reality of more than 174 million people in Latin America, approximately one third of its population. The slums where TECHO works with young volunteers and its
residents are a reflection of the exclusion that these families live in, and an obvious violation of their fundamental rights. According to TECHO’s perspective, people who live under the poverty line – with less than one dollar a day and under traditional measures of income- should also do this with the inability to meet their needs and the lack of power to transform, leaving them more vulnerable than other sectors of society.

Agustin Wolff, TECHO’s Executive Director of Social Programs for Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasizes: “Today, the biggest efforts to overcome poverty are focused on reducing its symptoms: homelessness, lack of education, poor access to
health services and absence of basic services. If these efforts are not followed by other joint efforts that help the cause- such as the violation of fundamental rights- and if we don’t unite other sectors of society; if we don’t combine these two efforts, we will never be able to celebrate the day when poverty is totally eradicated, which is what we aspire to do as TECHO.”

Meanwhile, Cecilia Castro, CEO of the Leaders of Slums Corporation “Tambien somos chilenos,” states: “In order to eradicate poverty, it is fundamental that the most vulnerable communities, are active participants of the process that will lead us out of this situation. For this reason, in the era in which social movements and citizen participation are stronger than ever, social leaders should lead this cause.”
