In October, 2016, Hurricane Matthew affected more than 1.4 million Haitians. Since then, TECHO started the campaign #HelpforHaiti to support communities recovering from this emergency.
Thanks to our donors from the U.S., Latin American Celebrities (Carlos Vives, Juanes, Carolina Gomez, Claudia Bahamon and Fonseca) and supporting groups like Design TECHO, we were able to raise over $76,000 for Haiti.
During Thanksgiving weekend, 19 TECHO-U.S. volunteers and more than 55 TECHO-Haiti volunteers participated by building 5 new homes for the families affected by the hurricane, living in the impoverished Trou Gilot Community, Cabaret Commune.
In total, TECHO has already built 15 transitional houses in Haiti since Hurricane Matthew thanks to the contributions from TECHO-US. Additionally, thanks to those funds we have implemented educational programs in collaboration with Alternaid which support 120 children in the affected communities.
During 2017, we will build 40 more transitional houses and pledge to keep supporting these families.
