With the message: «»Disrupting Philantropy»»

On October 23, CEO of TECHO-U.S. Nicolas Berardi shared his vision for “Disrupting Philanthropy” in front of 700 people at the TEDxMIA event “Framing the Future” at the New World Center in Miami Beach.

“We live by the premise that poverty will always exist and that’s exactly why philanthropy today is failing,” said Berardi, who at age 18 was introduced to TECHO through a construction where he went as a volunteer in a slum near his home in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

“Only when we understand that poverty is the reflection of how we think as a society, will we be able to bring about a new paradigm. We’re talking about something much bigger than philanthropy; we’re talking about changing the world,” he added.

TEDx is a social platform that offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world to share their “idea worth spreading.”

TECHO has participated in various TED events, such as Brazil,  Mexico and partnered with TECHO’s Headquarters for Latin America and the Caribbean. Together they have presented some of the perspectives of TECHO in relation to poverty and volunteer work in Latin America.

In a version of TED talks in Rio de la Plata, the then social director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Claudio Castro, prompted a comparison between those living in slums and academia, as the basis of synergy in overcoming poverty. “When I stop talking about ‘this country’ and talk about ‘my country,’ there is a necessary step forward in the construction of Latin America,” he said.

Likewise, at the TEDx talk at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico, Juan Francisco del Cerro, CEo at TECHO Mexico, shared the keys to driving meaningful ventures. “If we are not satisfied with today’s reality, we need to innovate, and if that innovation is not cultivated to change the reality in which we live, then we are all doomed to perpetuate it,” he explained.
